The trauma brought on by childhood neglect, domestic or sexual abuse and war wreak havoc in our bodies, states Bessel van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score…. Van der Kolk draws on 30 years of expertise to argue powerfully that injury is one of the West’s most urgent public health problems of all of the non-fiction books I’ve read, this is by far the best one . I was raised in a challenging manner. Lots went wrong. My brother and I thought we were undesirable and we had plenty of proof to back up our sentiment. As soon as I became an adult, I subscribe to the concepts of people like Rush Limbaugh and drove around listening to his radio show proclaiming there is no such thing as post-traumatic stress disorder. I thought I could gut it out, that the past was the past and only weak people needed to discuss their difficulties. I thought only losers behaved badly as adults because of anything in their childhood or beyond and that claiming you were affected by any previous difficulty was a crutch to allow you to embrace failure. Frankly, for a moment, that strategy worked . I got married, had some fantastic children (still have them thankfully), built a company. Nevertheless, it didn’t take too long before everything came crashing down. The anxiety that was always in my neck and torso was, to put it mildly, a diversion. It is quite tough to be kind to people, to focus on your job, to love others when your entire electricity is spent attempting to pretend you don’t feel as s***. When you can’t sleep because your heart is beating so forcefully that the whole bed is vibrating – at least it feels that way – you not only lose the pleasure of sleep, but you feel hopeless and miserable and much more so when you’re not able to understand why you feel like this. When you see everything you’ve go away and can only occasionally find the strength to look after yourself and your small business and want others in your life to carry you from time to time (much to your embarrassment) and yet you think you are smart and capable and don’t have any comprehension of why you are where you’re, life becomes a slog. You trudge through it wishing you were dead or something would kill you even if, like me, you’d never kill yourself.
